People believed children born with intellectual disability were punishments from the gods. Many were left to die in the wild. The "lucky" became court jesters. -

Those with mild ID were probably not noticed. The "lucky" ones with severe ID were thought to receive divine revelations. The unlucky ones were usually put in idiot cages in town centers. -

More humane treatment starts, including behavioral management techniques and individualized instruction. -

Americans generally believe those with ID could be useful members of society, doing primarily jobs that required physical strength. -
Early 19th Century
Industrialization is in full swing and those with ID are no longer as useful in the work force. They become the scapegoat for urban issues like crime and poverty. -
1900-1950s
Sterilization is a common forced practice for those with ID. -
1950s
Studies show there is no single hereditary cause of ID and many causes like infection or trauma are usually at the root of it. Educational programs start to be created for those with ID -

IDEA requires all students be granted a free and appropriate education in the least restricted environment. -
1980s-early 1990s
Separate classrooms are the normal set up in public schools for students with ID. -
1997
Changes to IDEA now require quality education & outcomes for all students. Inclusion in the classroom becomes more common.
