    Iron And Steel Imports (I)

In these five years, engineering works called out for greater quantities of iron and steel, and thus over this period a toatal of a approximately 5500 tonnes of iron and steel were imported.
  • Period: to

    Iron and Steel Imports (II)

Even further indulstrialisation and engineering activity called for even more materials to do so- thus, during this period, a total of around 7500 tonnes more iron and steel was imported.
  • Sydney Foundry and Engineering Works

A major step in the Industrialisation of Australia, at this time Peter Russell takes over control of the Sydney Foundry and Engineering Works. His foundry, possibly the first foundry created in Australia, produced both iron and brass castings, as well as many types a construction materials for architecture and steamships alike.
  • First Smelting Attempt

In 1848, the first attempt in Australia to smelt iron and steel was made, near Mittagong in New South Wales.
  • More Attempted Smelting

Victoria, 1873- The formation of Victoria Iron Company, later to become Lal Lal Iron Mining Co. Ltd in 1874. They also attempt to smelt iron and steel.
  • Blast Furnace Constructed

A small blastt furnace is constructed and operates into the 1880's, but it is not an economically sound idea.
  • First Smelting Plant Closes

Mittagong smelting plant closes due to it not being economical for its purpose.
  • Satisfactory Smelting

An employee is sent to Britain to learn the technology associated with the blast furnace. After five years, the blast furnace achieves satisfactory production. One of its first porducts are iron locomotive wheels- another step foward for Industrialising Australia.
