Japan Declares War
Japan delcares war on the Netherlands and invades both the Dutch East Indies and later Indonesia Islands. Until 1942, Indonesia was colonised by the Netherlands and was known as the Netherlands East Indies. Initially Japanese occupation was welcomed by the Indonesians as liberators.[20] During the occupation, the Indonesian nationalist movement increased in popularity. However, during the World War II occupation, tens of thousands of Indonesians were to starve, work as slaves, and die. -
Declaring Independence
**Note: Sukarno became Indonesia's first president, when he was born 0n 06/06/1901. He contiued serving even through the termoil of WWII. However, on this day the nationalist part and Sukarno declared indpendence from the Netherlans right after the Japanese were defeated in WWII. Sukarno, accompanied by Mohammad Hatta (right), proclaiming the independence of Indonesia. -
Declaration of Indpendence Is Drafted
The first draft of the declaration of Independence was written, and the annoucement area was moved from the feild in Jakarata to Sukarno's house, in fear of Japanese sabatoge. -
Indonesia Finally Gains Independence
Indonesia Officially Gains independece from the Dutch, however the Dutch still resisted and four years of fighting was still to come. When the Dutch ruled Indonesia two classes formed: A middle class and the extremely poor natives, however when the Indonesians recieved Indpendence the classes began to mix and a republican goverment was formed. -
Sukarno Becomes President
Sukarno Becomes The President of Indonesia, and he became known as the founding father of the Republic of Indonesia.
17 August 1945 -12 March 1967, overthrown in 1967. -
Indonesia Becomes Part of The UN
Indonesia is admitted into the United Nations. Indonesia wrote a telegram to the President of the UN which was recieved on Septemeber 16, 1950. After a dicussion with the General Ambessey on September 25, 1950 the electives from Indonesia held position once again in the United Nations, after a 20 month absence from the organization. -
Sukarno Attempts To Unify
In the 1950s, Sukarno attempted to consolidate his multi-island nation. He established (1956) a "guided democracy," with a cabinet that represented all political parties. Regional and factional problems, however, led him, in July, 1959, to dissolve the constituent assembly and assume full dictatorial powers. -
Sukarno Declares Himself President for Life
Sukarno, president since 1949 declares himself President for life. This creates numerous amounts of controversy, as he decided after this first decision to eliminate all form if paraliamentary govermnent. He hoped that by establishing himself as President for life he could one day create a communist nation. -
West Papua
1962 - The Dutch agree to transfer West Papua to Indonesia after a period of UN administration. -
Indonesia Drops Out of The UN
Indonesia became the first country to drop out of the UN. They did this becuse they refused the seating of their enemy nation Malaysia in the United Nations. Opposed Brtiish sponsered Federation of Malaysia. -
General Suharto Takes Control
A murderous campaign against Communists had begun. Sukarno threaten to order the army to "shoot to kill" to stop further demonstrations or violence against the Communists. AnA force had been unleashed, led by the anti-Communist generals. On March 12, 1967, Indonesia’s provincial parliament took away Sukarno’s presidential title. Sukarno was put under house arrest, where he remained until his death in 1970. And Suharto was named Acting President. -
Back In The UN
Indonesia comes back into the United Nations, and shortly after agrees to sign a peace treaty with Malaysia. -
Sukarno Recieves House Arrest
President Sukarno is placed under house arrest, and Suharno officially became the President. -
Death of First President
Sukarno dies. He is buried at Blitar, East Java -
First Theme Park
Suharto's wife inspired by a visit to Disneyland, conceives a national cultural theme park. -
East Timor
1975 - Portugal grants East Timor independence. 1976 - Indonesia invades East Timor and incorporates it as a province. -
Pancasila is Enforced
The Indonesian government require all organisations of any kind to adopt Pancasila as their sole basis. Pancasila: The five principles of Buddism.1.Belief in the one and only God.
2.Just and civilized humanity.
3.The unity of Indonesia.
4.Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives.
5.Social justice for all of the people of Indonesia. -
Suharto Prohibits of Any Relation to Sukarno
Sukarno's daughter Megawati Sukarnoputri becomes a member of parliament; Suharto prohibits display of images of Sukarno although they appear frequently nonetheless. -
Value of Rupiah Plummets
1997 - Asian economic crisis: Indonesian rupiah plummets in value. -
Suharto is Toppled
1998 - Protests and rioting topple Suharto; B J Habibie becomes president. -
Democracy
2002 August – Constitutional changes are seen as a step towards democracy. For the first time, voters will be able to elect a president and vice president. -
Bomb Attack
2002 October – Bomb attack on the Kuta Beach nightclub district on Bali kills 202 people, most of them tourists. -
Terriosist Attacks
2003 August – Car bomb explodes outside the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, killing 14 people. 2003 August-October – Three Bali bombing suspects are found guilty and sentenced to death for their roles in the 2002 attacks. A fourth suspect is given life imprisonment. -
Jakarta Car Bomb
2004 September – Car bomb attack outside Australian embassy in Jakarta kills nine, injures more than 180. -
Deadliest Tsunami in History: Death Toll Near 200,000
Tsunami VideoThe Tsunami in Indonesia is estimated to have released the energy of 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs, averaging about 9.0 magnetude. Years of built up energy spurring deep within the Indian Ocean suddenly released killer waves that moved at speeds faster than a normal jet. By the end of the day almost 150,000 people were missing and a couple million were missing. -

2005 October – Three suicide bombings on the resort island of Bali kill 23 people, including the bombers. -

2006 May – A powerful earthquake kills thousands of people on Java. -
Re-Election and Increased Amounts of Terroism
2009 July – President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wins re-election. Bombs rip through the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta -
Indonesia's Population REaches 240 Million
Indonesia's population contiues to climb, and as mentioned before it becomes the fourth largest populated country in the world, at around 240 million. -
Death By Crocodile Consumption
A crocodile swallows a ten year old in Eastern Indonesia. The girl was simply frolicking by a river, when a crocodile attacked her, and her father watched helplessly by the side. The river was closed down, as it has been the 2 crocodile attack within weeks.
