    Indonesia war of independence

    Indonesia was fighting for independence from the Duch, and more than a million Indonesians were killed in what is now known as the Indonesian War of Independence.     Annexation of East Timor

    On December 7, 1975, Indonesia invaded East Timor and occupied the country until July 17, 1976, when it proclaimed independence from Portugal. During the occupation, over 185,000 people were killed, injured, or captured, including civilians. The invasion was a turning point in Asia's decolonization.

    Oil boom

    The oil boom in Indonesia has led to an influx of money and improved living standards, but the economy seems to be vulnerable. In Aceh, the Free Aceh Movement demands independence in 1976, inspiring fighting; Suharto declares martial law in 1990. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan of the United States have sent several weapons, including Skyhawk attack planes, to Jakarta, trying to claim that such steps were necessary to secure the country.

    The East Timor Massacre and Uneasy Relations With the U.S.

    An East Timorese protest against Indonesian rule turns tragic in 1991 when Indonesian troops open fire on a crowd. The scene is captured on video by a British journalist, and international support for Indonesia plummets. Under President Bill Clinton, The Us cut off military training and sales of military equipment to Indonesia in 1992. As the Asian financial crisis of 1997 coincides with the worst drought in 50 years, civil unrest grows.

    The Rise of Terrorism and Megawati Sukarnoputri’s Presidency

    Elections in 1999 included 48 parties, showing democracy in action. Sukarno's daughter, Megawati Sukarnoputri, ends up winning parliamentary elections but loses the presidency. As law and order woresn, small terrorist cells find lush ground for newcomers. Abdurrahman Wahid is voted out of office by parliament in 2001 for corruption and incompetence.
