    Whilst at work, slaves would often sing songs of oppression, which eventually led to become blues music due to its confessional and emotional lyric style. During the 1800's, African slaves in the U,S,blended rhythm and the English language they learned to create the songs acapella

    This jazz scene emerged in America during the late 19th and early 20th century, and was popular amongst African American communities. New Orleans Jazz began in 1910, but in 1930, the popular form of swing bands began in local clubs in Kansas City.

    This music genre originated in Southern United States, in Tennessee during the 1920s, at the start of the American Dream. Labels such as Okeh Records began issuing hillbilly music records by Fiddlin' John Carson as early as 1923, which became a trend followed by Columbia Records in 1924. Many "hillbilly" musicians, such as Cliff Carlisle, recorded blues/country songs throughout the 1920s.

    Hank Williams released his single 'Move It On Over', as an American Country singer-songwriter, he created what is believed to be one of the earliest examples of alternative rock music.

  • Johnny Cash

    J.R. "Johnny" Cash (born February 26, 1932 – died September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter, actor, and author. He is considered to be one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.He is mostly known for being a country music icon, however his music spanned over a variety of genres, and he is known for embracing rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel.
  • The Velvet Underground

    This band was managed by Andy Warhol in New York City, and were an American band active between 1964-1973. The provocative subject matter and often nihilistic attitudes explored in their music proved influential in the development of punk rock and alternative music. After the release of their first debut album, 'The Velvet Underground&Nico',(1967) they received positivity from 'Rolling Stone' in 2003.

    Rolling Stone is a fortnightly magazine that focuses on popular culture. It was first founded in 1967 in San Francisco by Jann Wenner. It is still highly popular today due to its music coverage.
  • Alternative Rock

    From the late 1970's until the early 1980's, Alt-rock music became popular in its cultural origins of the UK and U.S. after the success of bands such as The Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Flowers of Romance.

    An alternative rock band from Crawley, England. The alternative rock genre began in England in the 1970's after Britpop became more conventional. This is an example of an alternative rock band that influenced many contemporary indie rock bands.
  • Joy Division

    Were an English rock band, now widely known for their contributions to the alternative rock genre, after their success with debut album, 'Unkown Pleasures'- still acclaimed to be a classic album. They were originally named Warsaw, and were formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. They were active from the years 1976-1980.
  • The Clash

    Were a part of the original wave of British punk, and featured an array of sub genres in their music such as reggae, funk, rockabilly and dub music. They received commercial success in 1977 after the relese of their debut album 'The Clash'.Equally, their third album, 'London Calling', released in the UK in December 1979, earned them popularity in the United States when it was released there the following month.

  • Grunge Music

    This genre of music derived from alternative rock, and began in Seattle-as it is often referred to as "The Seattle Sound". The style became popular during the 1990's because of the rise of indipendent record label Sub Pop .
