    Arrival of Europeans

  • British

    British people introduced indentured servitude to the Indian Ocean region after it was announced that slave trade was illegal
  • Whaling

    European traders in the South Pacific did a lot of whale hunting (whaling), which was popular in the Indian Ocean
  • Indian Rebellion

    There was an Indian Rebellion that involved the Sirmoor Rifles defending the British; 327 out of 490 men were killed
  • Petroleum

    Petroleum began to be shipped across the Indian ocean (in wooden barrels on-board shipping vessels)
  • Ebony Box: Trade

    The ebony box was created; Ebony trees have always grown in Southern India, Ceylonas, and even certain parts of Africa.
  • Clipper Ships

    Most famous clipper ship (ships that looked like a mountain of clouds under sail) raced. Ten clipper ships had Chinese goods inside of them, heading to London. The four that took the lead on the Indian River included: Taeping, Fiery Cross, and Serica, and Ariel

    Lakatoi (a ship) was sailed around the Indian Ocean by Papa New Guineans looking for slaves and goods
  • Lord Curzon

    Lord Curzon became Viceroy of India (holding one of the highest offices of the British colonial government)
  • Green Turtles

    In the beginning of 20th century- Indian Ocean was found hosting the world’s largest nesting populations of green turtles (Sadly, they have been hunted for their eggs)

    The first tea bags were created and made of fine silk bags that were hand sewn and used for trade

    More than 52,000 Lascars (immigrants in London) were employed on British ships
  • Rice

    A new rice was created in the Philippines by the International Rice Research Institute. It has much quicker growth rates and named IR8. Due to this rice, some countries along the Indian Ocean were able to shift their economies to manufacturing
