Premiere Public Theatre New York
Review - Cultural commentary, the stage could easily be any street just blocks away. Real story and could have taken place anywhere, it just needed the bare necessities -
Joseph Papp Public Theatre New York
Review - Makes use of nonrealistic devices shaped into nine confession scenes. Costume and actor choices were spotty and made them look like sophomore actors dressed as "clowns". Overall he thought it was a bad director and could have been better with a better producer/director. -
Guthry Lab Theatre
Review - Talked about how the play came to be, in the very early stages of the play writing, the author wrote the play and staged it in Houston but she didn't feel like it was complete. The writer wrote for the characters instead of the audience. -
Dobama Theatre, Cleveland Hights Ohio
Theatre - Was a large and well received theatre.
The Director, producer, and actors all created a chaos like type of play because of the setting and overall theme in the play. -
Edison Theatre
Review - Authentic environment, relatively boring until character Chilli is brought in. Hester's character is left with large holes in her background and the play doesn't explain lots of things. Hester is too much of a victim to be a main character. -
DC Theatre
Review - The style and art design is foggy for the most part. The actors are all very serious and portray very realistic sad moments. Actors lacked the ability to show realism through their acting skills. -
Urban Theatre Company
The play starts off slowly but eventually picks up to an exciting second act. Play doesn’t make any importance social statement. There seems to be no purpose to the meaning of the play or what message is trying to be perceived. -
Pershing Square New York
Review - Emphasizes the meaning of this play could happen anywhere during any time. The word SLUT is a condemning word for women and they are not able to get away from it. We see Hester easily have things taken away from her. The question of was this lifestyle that she had actually her fault or was it societies and the governments. -
Signature Theatre New York
Review - The production felt very modern and could've been written today. She found lots of little visual things that helped elevate the play and make it more believable and realistic. -
Townsen University
Review - The stage was minimalistic and also adds that it also relates to today and could have easily seen as being written today instead of in 1999.
