    President Jimmy Carter announced that there is to be a boycott of the 1980 olympics in Moscow. This was in response to the Soviet Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1979
  • Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) (“Star Wars”)

    Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) (“Star Wars”)
    SDI was proposed by Reagan to prevent missile attacks from other countries. It was highly unlikely to happen at the time because of lack of devices and technology.
  • “Caribbean Basin Initiative”

    “Caribbean Basin Initiative”
    The CBI aimed to provide several tariff and trade benefits to many Central American and Caribbean countries. It Also is to facilitate the economic development and export diversification of the Caribbean Basin economies.

    Mikhail Gorbachev becomes General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet     Union
    Gorbachev ruled until 1990. He quit ruling when the communist party lost its monopoly to power over the political system.

    President Reagan was hoping that supplying Iran with US military supplies and weapons that the relations with Iran would be strengthened. He also had hopes that hostages would be released.

    Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) ratified
    This was a treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union eliminating the use of shorter range missiles.

    The Berlin Wall divided conquered Germany. People of Germany were chipping off the wall and celebrating as the wall came down.

    This McDonalds was the first to be opened in the Soviet Union. Less than two years later the Soviet Union ceased to exist.

    Boris Yelstin elected President of Russia
    Yelstin was a hard working politic. He was President through the 1990's.
  • Germany is reunified

    Germany is reunified
    Reunification was highly wanted in East and West Germany. At first the reunification sent East Germany into reccession, and increased social tensions.

    Warsaw Pact is dissolved
    The warsaw Pact had dissolved because it had little support by the people. The treaties were also obsolete when communists came into power.

    The Soviet Union had divided into 15 seperate countries. This break up was seen as freedom at last.
