French Surrender at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu
At the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the French surrendered to Ho Chi Minh’s Viet Minh's forces after a battle that lasted 57 days. The importance of this event is that this battle brought the French colonial influence to an end and paved the way for the division of Vietnam (Friench Defeated).

The Division of Vietnam
July 21, 1954 the division of Vietnam took place. Vietnam was to be divided at the seventeenth parallel. The importance of this agreement was that it set up two different countries that will later lead to the Vietnam War (The Vietnam War).

Buddhist Monks Participate in Self-Immolation

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
U.S. Congress passed the resolution which gave President Lyndon B. Johnson the authority to take any actions necessary to protect South East Asia (Battlefield). U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war was has begun.

Attack on Bien Hoa Air Base
In the midst of the presidential election, Vietcong mortar shells hit the Bien Hoa Air Base. This attack had a major impact on military personell and equipment. Four Americans were killed and 76 were wounded. Five B-57 bombers were destroyed and fifteen were damaged (Battlefield).

Operation Rolling Thunder
President Johnson authorizes Operation Rolling Thunder. Operation Rolling Thunder was an extensive bombing campaign with the intent to force the North Vietcong to no longer support the Vietcong gorillas in the south (Battlefield).

Tet Offensive
During the Chinese New Year, the North Vietcong launched many suprise attacks on cities and villages during a cease fire. This is important because President Johnson had been pushing the idea that the war was soon coming to an end, but in reality the war was very much alive (Bass). Sources
