  • Massachusetts Education Law of 1647

    Massachusetts Education Law of 1647
    The court of the Massachusetts Bay colony passes a law stating that towns with 50 families should have an elementary school and that those with 100 families should have a Latin school. This was more so done so that Puritan children could better understand and read the bible.
  • New York Public School Society

    New York Public School Society
    New York public schools are formed by wealthy men so that poor children can receive an education. The way they are run is that 1 instructor lectures a room of about 100 pupils if necessary, this is known as the "Lancasterian" model. The schools are strict and preach obedience, skills that would be good for a future worker.

    The supreme court rules that Louisiana can have separate train cars for different races as long as they are equal in quality. Essentially the verdict lays the way for segregation to be legal which drastically affects education.

    The act pushes for for funding of vocational education. Corporations push for this to pass so that they no longer have to deal with the unions and the apprentices and it gives them more control over how people learn the skills for their work.

    The supreme court rules unanimously that segregation in schools violates the 14th amendment and that it is illegal to have schools that allow for it.
  • Little Rock Nine

    When a federal court ordered for schools in Little Rock to allow for integration but the Governor of Arkansas orders the state guard to not allow 9 students to enter a high school but then the president is forced to deploy the military in order to not be defied by a state.

    A law is passed that states discrimination on the basis of sex is illegal for any educational program that is receiving federal aid. Women are to able to participate in sports programs and other extra curricular activities now.
