Stamp Act Passed
Britain taxed printed goods like newspapers and legal documents in the colonies in order to pay for the French and Indian War. It was passed March 22nd 1765 by British Parliament. -
Boston Massacre
British soldiers fired on an angry crowd of colonists throwing rocks and snowballs at them. -
Boston Tea Party
About 150 colonists climbed aboard ships docked in the Boston Harbor and dumped tea into the water. -
First Continental Congress
Colonial leaders met in Philadelphia to discuss their problems with Britain. At the meeting they they voted to stop most trade with Britain, asked colonists to form militias, and sent a signed petition to King George III reminding him about their rights as british citizens. -
Patrick Henry Gives His Famous Speech
Patrick Henry said the famous words, " Give me liberty, or give me death!" that in a speech that rallied colonists. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord Fought
British troops marched from Boston for Lexington and Concord to capture Patriot supplies. Patriot militias met them there and the encounter became the first armed battle between the British and the colonists. -
Approval of the Declaration of Independence.
Congress voted to approve the Declaration of Independence at the 2nd Continental Congress and many colonists celebrated. -
American Victory at the Battle of Saratoga
The Americans defeated the British in New York and this became a turning point of the war. Ben Franklin had finally convinced the French to help the Americans in the war after this battle. -
British Surrender at the Battle of Yorktown
The Americans surrounded the British base in Yorktown by land and the French fleet surrounded them by sea forcing, British General Cornwallis to surrender.Cornwallis' surrender meant that the Americans had won the war. -
Treaty of Paris Signed
The British and the Americans both signed the Treaty of Paris which recognized the United States of America as a country.
