Abraham Lincoln became president and South Carolina seceded from the Union for fear that they might lose their slaves. South Carolina had become the Confederates State of America. -

South Carolina troops fired on Fort Sumnter in Charleston Harbor. South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union.
