Battle of Dien Bien Phu
This image shows the Viet Minh flag being waved after the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was important because the French were defeated by Viet Minh, which ended the involvement of the French in the Vietnam War. -
Military Assistance
This image shows the U.S. President shaking hands with the South Vietnam President.
This event was important because US President Dwight Eisenhower decided to send some of our men in to help South Vietnam Army train for fighting in the war. This action was then considered to be the official involvement of the U.S. -
North enters South
This image shows North Vietnam soldiers preparing for the entrance into South Vietnam.
This event is important because this is when the war basically began. North Vietnamese soldiers go into South Vietnam and kill hundreds of officals and citizens as well. -
Strategic Hamlet Program
This image shows a secured village that was known as the Vietnamese Hamlet.
The creation of this program was important because it gave the rural population from Vietnam a safe place to stay. This program provided education and healthcare for the villagers that were moved into the Hamlet. -
Diem Overthrown
This image show Ngo Tinh Diem, South Vietnam's President.
President Diem was overthrown in a military coup that took place with the approval of the United States. The U.S. actually believed that by overthrowing him as a president, they could strengthen the opposition to the communist Viet Cong. -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident
This image shows the United States' Navy ship, USS Maddox, which was one of the destroyers attacked.
On August of 1964, Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked two U.S. destroyer ships that were sitting on international waters. A few days later the U.S. Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which is when U.S. aerial bombing began on North Vietnam. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
This image shows airplanes used during the Vietnam war. These are F105 Thunderchiefs flying over North Vietnam on February 8, 1966.
Operation Rolling Thunder was important because this was when the United States provided military equipment and advisors to help the government of South Vietnam from being taken over by North Vietnam and their allies. This operation marked the first U.S. military aircraft attack on North Vietnamese territory and then expanded the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. -
Battle of Ba Gia

The Battle of Ba Gia was a major battle that marked the beginning of the National Liberation Front's Summer Offensive of 1965. This took place during the early stages of the Vietnam War, and is known in Vietnam as the American War. -
Tet Offensive
This image shows an American soldier of the 5th battalion firing on Thon La Chu.
The Tet Offensive was important because it resulted in massive casualties on both sides. For many Americans, it was a sign that the United States was losing the war against the North Vietnamese and it opened their eyes. -
My Lai Massacre
This image show some of the civilians killed by U.S. American troops.
Failing to catch Vietnamese guerillas made the Americans seek the revenge on the Vietnam civilians This event was one of the most violent incidents against citizens during the Vietnam War. -
Vietnamization and U.S. Withdrawal
President Richard M. Nixon proposes his idea of Vietnamization in the White House.
Vietnamization of the war was promoted, promising to withdrawl U.S. troops gradually from Vietnam and promising to hand over management of the war effort to the South Vietnamese. President Nixon pledged to withdrawl a minimum of 150,000 troops within a twelve months span. -
The Eastertide Offensive
This image shows a North Vietnamese Type 59 tank that was captured in South Vietnam.
The event was a military campaign that was conducted by the People's Army of Vietnam against the Army of Republic of Vietnam and the U.S. It was significant because PAVN forces continued to occupy around ten percent of South Vietnam after the offensive was defeated. As a result of this campaign, both sides softened their stance in Paris and were more willing to make concessions during negotiations. -
Peace Agreement
This image shows Le Duc Tho and Henry Kissinger shaking hands after the peace treaty was signed.
The signing of this peace treaty brought the involvement of the United States in theh Vietnam War to an end. Most of the American troops that were in Vietnam retured home that year. -
Final Withdrawl
This image shows American soldiers in Vietnam who are ready for their departure.
America's longest war concludes and the final American troops in Vietnam are withdrawn. President Nixon states "the day we have all worked and prayed for has finally come". After many had served their countries and sacrificed their lives, peace has finally arrived. -
It's Over!
This image shows the celebrations that took place after the Vietnam war ened.
At 8:35 a.m., the last Americans depart Saigon, ending the United States involvement in Vietnam. By 11 a.m., the red and blue Viet Cong flag flies from the presidential palace. The war was finally over.
