SmartPhones
The first smart phone was created in late 1992 by a team of engineers for IBM and BellSouth. It was called the Simon Personal Communicator and combined the usage of a cell phone and a PDA. It even included a touch screen and apps. Unfortunately the Simon Personal Communicator wasn't available to purchase until August 6th, 1994 -
Six Degrees
The first recognizable social media site it was created in 1997 by Andrew Weinreich. It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. -
Google
Google was created by Lary Page and Sergey Brin on September 4th of 1998. It was named after googol, which is the name for 1 followed by 100 zeros. -
LinkedIn
LinkedIn was created on December 28th, 2002, but wasn't officially launched until May 5th, 2003. It was invented by a man named Reid Hoffman. LinkedIn is mainly used for professionally networking, and by April of 2017 had more than 500 million users in 200 different countries. -
MySpace
MySpace was created on August 1st, 2003 by Tom Anderson. From 2005 to 2008, MySpace was the largest social networking site in the world. In June of 2006 it surpasses google as the most visited website in the United States. -
Facebook
Facebook was created February 4th, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg originally created facebook as a way for Harvard to connect with students around campus but later expanded to Boston University. By September of 2006 facebook opened up to everyone with a valid email address who is 13 years or older. -
Youtube
Youtube was created by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim on Feburary 14th, 2005. Youtube allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to favorites, report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users. In November of 2006, youtube was bought by google for $1.65 billion dollars. -
Twitter
Twitter was created March, 21st 2006 and launched in July of that year. It was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Evan Williams and Biz Stone. It currently has 319 Million users. It is known as a quick blogging site. -
GroupMe
GroupMe was created in May 2010 by Jack Hecht and Steve Martocci. In August 2011 GroupMe delivered 100 million messages a month and by June 2012 that number jumped to 550 million. -
Vine
Created by Don Hoffman, Rus Yusupov, Colin Kroll in June 2012 created vine it was acquired by twitter in October 2012 for a reported $30 million. It was officially launched on January 24th, 2013 for free. It is used as a form of entertainment through 6 seconds video. -
Instagram
Instagram was created October 6th, 2010 by Kevin System and Mike Krieger. It is used as a photo sharing app and has hit over 700 million users since its launch.
