Period: 276 BCE to 195 BCE
Eratosthenes
Used the sun to get an almost perfect measurement of the size of the earth. This gave early humans an idea that there are more lands on earth unexplored, which gave us a drive for exploration. -
Period: 90 to 168
Claudius Ptolemy
Created a model of the universe that says everything revolves around the earth. Gave us an early understanding of what the universe might look like. -
Period: 1473 to
Nicolaus Copernicus
He built a model of the solar system where everything revolved around the sun instead of the Earth. Gave us a look as to what our solar system actually looked like and gave us ideas as to why everything is like it is. -
Period: 1546 to
Tycho Brahe
-He built an early observatory and measured one minute of arc. He completed this sometime in his later life. This helped launch the observation of space and gave us measurements before we invented telescopes. -
Period: 1571 to
Johannes Kepler
Created 3 laws that include motions of planets that are still in use to this day. This still helps us measure how far planets are from the star using these laws to give us a specific region as to where it might be located. -
Period: to
Sir Isaac Newton
He is well known for his work on gravity and making laws that all objects follow when in contact with gravity. This gave us a better understanding of how things work, and how the universe was created. -
Period: to
Albert Einstein
He helped change the way we look at the universe and gave us the theory that space and time are linked and always will be. This changed our entire understanding of space, which is that space and time are continuous, but only get effected by gravity.
