Britain controlled most of India in the 1850's. The Indians were treated badly. Indian soldiers found out that the cartiges for new rifles they would use were covered in pork fat they refused to use them. THe british in return punished them. The people were outraged and rebeled. -
Suez Canal links the Mediterranean and Red Seas
It was opened on 1869, it was very useful because it would allow europeans as well as others quicker access it would allow for trade with African colonies. It was funded by French investors but then fell into british hands. -
Berlin Conference convenes to discuss terms for African colonization
European countries were trying to colonize Africa for its resources, So there was a conference held in 1884 inorder to determine which country would get what part of africa. The sad thing is that no one was there to represent Africa. -
Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii
Queen Liluokalani made a new constitution in order to increase her power. She was trying to restore the political power of Hawaiians at the expense of wealthy planters. The planters didn't agree with this and soon overthru Queen Liliuokalani in 1893 -
Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa
the King of Ethiopia, Menelik the second succesfully protected his country by playing European countries against each other while he gathered weapons for hos country.
