Imperialism vs. China, Japan, and Africa

  • opium war/ Treaty of Nanjing

    Britain and the Chinese got to war over opium. Many people got addicted to the drug. Another thing is China lost the war in the end.
  • Berlin Conference

    The Berlin Conference was a meeting that 14 European countries were all at. in the meeting they were discussing how to divide up Africa and how to imperialize. The outcome of this meeting was Africa almost lost all of there land to the Europeans.
  • Taiping Rebellion

    Following the opium war, people started moving into China and food became short, opium was taken across the nation which leads to the poor conditions starting the rebellion. In an effort to create an ideal, perfect place, 20 million people died making the rebellion unsuccessful.
  • Commodere Perry arrives in Japan

    The United States wanted to use it as a station and trade routes.
    The Japanese rejected his demands and Perry withdrew from Japan knowing he would return.
  • Treaty of Kanagawa

    U.S Commodore Mathew took 4 black wooden ships powered by steam to Japan which astounded the Japanese. This made the emperor worried and he realized he had no other choice but to receive and accept the letter the president wrote. The effect was Japan granted foreigners permission to trade, more rights to foreign nations.
  • Crimean War ends

    The Crimean War was a battle with the militaries because they all had advanced weapons. The Russian Empire lost to an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, Britain, and Sardinia. Some of the motives were because of religious reasons.
  • Sepoy Mutiny ends

    The causes of the sepoy rebellion were when some angry sepoys rose up against their British officers. Also when the east India company required sepoys to serve overseas which was against the sepoy's religion. Some effect of the rebellion was a bitter legacy and a mistrust on both sides.
  • Meji Restoration

    The emperor before the government stepped down and became the emperor. The effect was Japan modernized and got a better government.
  • Building of the Suez Canal

    This was important because now this would be a good trade route. The effect of the building really helped with trading and getting information across countries quicker.
  • Sino- Japanese War

    China and Japan signed a hands-off agreement due to their shared interest in Korea, but China broke the agreement which started the war. The effect was Japan drove the Chinese out of Korea, destroyed the Chinese navy and gained a foothold in the Manchuria they later signed the peace treaty.
  • Ethipoia Wins The battle of Adwa

    On this date in 1896, Ethiopia defeated the Italian colonial army in the Battle of Adwa. This victory signaled the decline of European colonialism in Black Africa. The Ethiopian army's victory checked Italy's attempt to build an empire in Africa. The victory had further significance for being the first crushing defeat of a European power by African forces during the colonial era.
  • Open Door Policy

    The Americans worried split up china and take out America out of the trading picture. The policy made China open to all the merchants which in turn protected America's trading rights and china's freedom.
  • Boxer Rebeliion

    The open-door policy allowed anyone to come to China, which made people angry. China became ashamed. Even though the rebellion failed they gained a stronger sense of nationalism after China realized they have to resist foreign intervention. They felt that the government had to listen to their needs more.
  • Russo - Japanese War

    Japan launched a surprise attack on the Russian ship. Japan defeated Russia and through the agreement of the treaty, Russia had to stay out of Korea. The effect was The Russians refused to agree to stay out of Korea which made Japan mad.
  • China becomes Constitutional Monarchy

    They were suggested by Chinese officials to restructure their government. They were also mad about the opposing power. China was at unrest and experienced internal and external threats. Also, both China and Japan are facing pressure from the west.
