  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    Written by President James Monroe for congress, the Monoe Doctrine stated the America would not be avaliable for future colonialization by Europe. It is integral in relation with the United State's foriegn policy.
  • Opium Wars

    Opium Wars
    There were two opium wars and they were used to try and open commercial trade in China. This created tension between the Anglo Chinese and British and eventually weakened the Qing dynasty. The Treaty of Nanjing attempted to sever unfair diplomatic tension between China and Britain, but many citizens felt it was unfair, leading to the second war.China was trading opium at the time and it began in 1839.
  • Open Door Policy

    Open Door Policy
    This policy was first created by the United States in order to keep trade in China open on a fair basis. Countries were supposed to remain within their sphere of influence and not effect the Chinese trade ports. The date is when the Open Door note was created, but the policy was in use during the late 19th century.
  • Boer War

    Boer War
    Diamonds and gold were discovered in southern Africa and the Boers wanted to keep outsiders from infiltrating their land. The war was between the Boers and the British and included, guerilla tactics, raids, and concentration camps. This is the start date below.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    Peasants began siege on a European portion of Beijing for months. The Chinese government did nothing to stop them and it was an anti-foreign uprising. Great Britain sent 12,020 troops to the coast of China to assist in the Western domination. Beijing fell on On August 5, 1900 and British and American forces entered Yangcun fiercely. By the end of the rebellion the Qing dynasty was required to allow foreign powers inside their empire. 1901 was the ending and it began in 1899.
  • Revolution of 1911

    Revolution of 1911
    The Xinhai Revolution, or the Revolution of 1911, revolutionaries from southern China helped to break down the imperialism of the Qing dynasty and create a republic.
  • Panama Canal Built

    Panama Canal Built
    The Panama Canal is a trans-isthmian canal built under the direction of Theodore Roosevelt. This helped with the transportation of goods from the Atlantic to the Pacific quickly and effieciently.
