Suez Canal
Muhammad Ali was the was a soldier that became the governor of Egypt by the Ottomans. His successors lack his type of skills so Ferndinad de Lesseps organized a company to build the Suez Canal. But European nations had gained power over the ottomans by extending the loans at high interest rates.This made the ruler of eygpt unable to repay loans he contracted for the canal and other projects. So to pay he shold his shares in the canal. -
Berlin Conference
All European powers met at this international conference to avoid any wars. Africans were not invited to this conference. They all agreed that a European power would not be able to claim any part of Africa unless it had set up an office for government. In the 20 years after the conference the European powers broke up almost the whole continent. -
Industrialization
Poplulation had grown rapidly due to peasents moved to cities for work. The industry was expanding very fast. The coal mining,steel making,shipyards,and copper helped Japan a lot with the ndustrial powerhouses. -
First Sino-Japanese War
As china extended its influence in Korea,they came into conflict with China. Japan had benefited from modernization and this made China and the West suprised that Japan won easily. This gained them teaty ports in China and control over the island of Taiwan. This joined the West in the race for the empire. -
The Spanish-American War
War broke out between Spain and the United States over Cuba trying to win independence from Spain. The spanish fleet was stationed in the philippines. Filipino rebel leaders were encouraged by American naval officers to declare independence from Spain. The rebel soldiers gave their support by helping with the fight against the spanish troops. -
Boxer uprising
A group of chinese had formed a secret society called the Righteous Harmonious Fists. Westerners watching them train in martial arts would dubb them boxers. They wanted to drive out the "foreign devils." These were people polluting the land with their un-Chinese ways,weird buildings,and machines. -
Birth of a Republic
A two year old boy had inherited the throne and this made China freak out. The uprisings in the provinces spread swiftly. Students,peasents,local warlords,and even court politicans helped bring down the Quing dynasty. Then Sun Yixian was named president of the new China President. -

Annexation
Japan annexed Korea which turned the kingdom into the Japanese empire. Japan ruled for 35 years. After nine years of annexation, A protest that was nonviolent began against the japanese. The japanese crushed this uprising and killed many koreans.
