France Starts Colonization in Africa
France had a few motives t o travel to Africa. France wanted to better their economy. Another reason was that France still needed to pay Prussian indemnities. They also wanted to recover from the Great Depression. France wanted to block the English from expanding to the west of Africa. They wanted to create a great empire. -
France in Algeria
The French came to Algeria in 1830. At first the people put up resistance to the French. The French put up a program, in which they would kill anyone who resisted them. Many people died during this period. France sucessfully invaded Algeria. -
Senegal
The French began to invade the Senegal coast in 1843 under Governor General Bouet Willaumez. He began a time of expansion. He got the port of St. Louis in Senegal River. The French government took complete control over the port city from the Bordeaux merchant firms, which orginally controlled it. As the French expanded, it came to an ended exploration with the Franco-Prussian War, as it produced a budget crisis after France paid Germany for the costs of the war. -
Cambodia
King Norodom of Cambodia requested a French protectorate over his kingdom in 1867. This was after the French establishment of a colony in Cochinchina. Cambodia was seen as a buffer between French possessions in Vietnam and Siam. Norodom signed a treaty that said that send French protectorate over his kingdom. The Cambodian monarchy was remained, but power was in a resident general.France was in charge of Cambodia's foreign and trade relations and provided military protection. -
Suez Canal
The Suez Canal was built to facilitate travel from the Nile river to the Red Sea. In 1854, Ferdinand de Lesseps obtained a concession from Sa'id Pasha to create a company to construct a canal open to ships of all nations.It took about 10 years using forced labor of Egyptian workers. The canal opened under French control on November 17,1869.Britain invades Egypt, with French help, in 1882.The canal is restored to Egyptian control afterFrench and British withdrawal in 1956 -
Tunisia
The French protectorate of Tunisia was established in 1881.The French went into Tunisia after getting Algeria. Tunisia was small, but the located was important as it offered good ports. The French forced the leader to signed a treaty to grant Tunisia as protectorate of France.Tunisia was different from Algeria as the Bey remained in office, and Tunisia was deemed nominally independent. -
IndoChina
French Indo-China officially known as the Indo-Chinese Union after 1887.Tonkin,Annam and Cochinchina with Cambodia were grouped together. France obtained control over Vietnam after its victory over China in the Sino-French War. There were many rebellions in amny of the territories. After a while France gave the territories that were for Thailand, back to Thailand. -
Samori Toure
Samori Touré was born in 1830 in a village southeast of Kankan (now Guinea). He refused to submit to the French.Samori Touré created the Mandinka empir between 1852 and 1882. The French accused Samori of refusing to comply to their order to withdraw from an important market center. They started war with him. From 1882 to 1885, Samori fought the French. In 1888, he took up arms again when the French reneged on the treaty by attempting to foster rebellion within his empire.He was exiled to Gabon. -
Morocco
Morocco became a protectorate of France in 1912. It was established by the Treaty of Fez. According to the treaty, the Sultan reigned but did not rule. At first, the Morocans tried to fight for thier country, but failed and were defeated by the French.The French government promoted economic development, modern transportation system, and the development of a modern agriculture. Many groups presuured France into increasing its' control in Morocco. -
Fall of French Colonial Empire
The French empire began to fall during World War II. It started in Algeria, when many Algerians were killed to repress them. Then, there was an IndoChina war. After this, Algeria started the Algerian War in 1954. Ultimately, Algeria gained independence. The French Union was replaced and many other countries under French also began revolted and gaining their indpendence as well.
