Algeria was a province of the Ottoman Empire. There wasn’t a lot of European political and cultural influence in the northern part of Africa where Algeria is located. A majority of Algerians were Muslim before the French took over, soon after the French took over many were converted to Christianity. Algeria's coast was filled with port cities that provided raw materials and natural resourced to other countries. -

The French used direct rule against Algeria. Algerians were treated poorly and like second class in their own country. There was a lot of violence and fighting in Algeria. The French took lands for low prices from the owners. The French came to Algeria for economic reasons; they wanted raw materials from Algeria. -

Berber leader Abdel-Kader of Mascara fought two wars against France in 1832-1834 and 1835-1837 without either side dominating. French invaded Morocco in 1844 where they captured Abdel-Kader. -
Treaty of Tangier
The French signed the Treaty of Tangier in 1844 and accepted Moroccan independence. -
Reaction of Algerians
Algerians, along with other countries being imperialized by European countries, tried to fight back but because Europeans brought diseases to Algeria and Algeria’s weapons weren’t modernized it was easier for the French to take control. When the French capture Morocco, Algerians protested. The signing of the Treaty of Tangier gave morocco its independence. -

France took over the oasis of El Golea is known as El Meniaa. It ended the uprisings of the Berber. -

French used new tactics that needed helicopters to follow the rebels into their mountain hideouts. In September 1959 De Gaulle gave in. -
