Before Imperialism
Industrialization was the cause of most imperialism in Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries. Africa was looked at as a source of materials and an industrial market. This is why many stronger European countries took over African land. -
Imperialism Begins
Algeria was one of the first African countries occupied by the French. The French began invading on July 5, 1830 which started an Algerian Resistance. -
How were they treated?
When the French took over Algeria, the people were treated poorly. There was a great deal of violence, fighting and incomprehension between who were the rulers and who were the ruled. -
The Treaty of Tangier
The Treaty of Tangier on September 10, 1844 was signed by France to recognize the independence of Morocco. -
Reaction
When European Imperialism began, people tried to fight back but did not succeed due to disease that Europeans brought to Algeria and a lack of weapons. -
Resistance
An Algerian Resistance continues into the desert leading to the Flatters Expedition, a railroad expedition, being destroyed. -

After the War
Algerians begin recieve French citizenship as a result of their service in WWI. In the late 20's and even into the Great Depression thing calmed down. -
Independence
Algeria gains independence from France.
