Opium Wars
The British was was smuggling Opium (From India) into China because China would not Trade with them. A war arose and the British crushed the Chineese. They forced them to sign a treaty called Nanjing. -
Nanjing Treaty
This treaty was a huge sucess to the British for 2 main reasons.The first is they got control of Hong Kong. They also gained a lot of money. This was a treaty very much in favor or Britian because they won the opium war. -
Sepoy Rebellion
Sepoys (Indian Soldiers) rebelled agisnt the British army because Britan established complete political control of India. This 1 year revolt won by the British came with a big impact, parliment increased control of India and shut down the dominance of the British East India Company. -
British Raj Founded
British Raj had many posotive and negative affects.
Posotive:Tried to make the indians happy by building Indias economy and improved roads, canals, schools, and railroads.
Negatives: Made the farmers grow cotton, which lead to a food shortage and took away many of their rights. -
British East India Company (end)
British East India Company was established. By 1857, it became the most powerfull trading compaies in the entire world. Because of the great power it had, it controlled almost all of India. -
Indian National Congress
As a result of British Raj, the Indian national COngress was formed in an attempt to gain more rights. This sparked nationalism amoung India. -
Boer War
Dutch settlers of southern Africa. Britain took possession of the Dutch Cape colony in 1806. Resistance from the independence-minded Boers sparked connflict. Britian won and put the the Dutch in prison.
