Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. -
British protectorate
Egyptian nationlists where against the outside views and ideas of foreign countries so they started revolts. Britain made Egypt one of it's protectorates (a state that is controlled and protected by another.) and the governor of Egypt completely followed the rules set by the British. The nationalist continued to revolt as Egypt advanced. -
Berlin conference
King Leopald II decides he wants to expand his kingdom in Belgium by scouting out Africa and making arranging trade treaties with the african leaders. France, Britain, and Germany become aware and started grabbing pieces of Africa as well with no regard for boundaries. This conference held in Berlin, Germany was to avoid battles over land.NO AFRICANS WERE INVITED. -
King Leopold II and the congo
King Leopold II agreed to abolish slavery but only if he got the Congo to himself. He acquired his own private country where he treated the inhabitants terribly. The Congo was rich in rubber and after the tire was introduced he forced the inhabitants to harvest rubber, if they didn't he cut off their hands. Queen Liliuokalani
Americans wanted to grow sugar cane in Hawii but the queen during the time wanted nothing to do with the world outside of Hawaii. Some American growers had overthrew her and the U.S. had added Hawaii to it's territory. -
First Sino-Japanese War
Japan's influence in Korea was strong but it developed into a problem for China. A competitetion was started between the two countries which ended up starting a war.China's resources were good but Japan was modernized and to the surprise of both China and the west Japan won with ease. -
Battle of Adwa
Europe was reforming and modernizing most of Africa but Ethiopia was split up. Menelik II started reforming his country himself and started improving transportation, education, and defense. When Italy came to Ethiopia and tried to take it over they fought back. -
Spanish-American war
Cuba was trying to gain independence from the U.S. which ignited a war between the U.S. and Spain. The U.S. influenced the Filipino leaders to gain independence from spain and they started helping the U.S. The U.S. signed a $20 mill. Agreement to Spain for control of the Philippines. -
The Boer War
Britain controlled most of the highly profitable and populated areas in Africa and kept expanding. Boers where Dutch settlers who resided in Africa but they where trying to escape the British owned parts of Africa. When people in the Boer lands found gold and diamonds Britain wanted what the Boers found so a war broke out. 1899-1902 -
Maji-Maji Rebellion
A series of rebellions we're occurring after Britain, France, and Germany took parts of Africa. One of the fierces rebellions being the Maji Maji Rebellion, this was Africans vs. Germans and the Africans fight for their freedom. They eventually lost because of Germans burninga vast amount of their land and resources and leaving them to starve -
