Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was a United States policy of opposing European colonialism in the Americas beginning in 1823. President James Monroe first stated the doctrine during his seventh annual State of the Union Address to Congress. -
Great Trek
The Great Trek is regarded in Afrikaners as a central event of their 19th-century history. The migrating Boers left in a series of groups with almost an equal number of mixed-race people. After some minor setbacks they were able to defeat large parts of African military kingdom thanks to skilled horses and guns. In Transorangia the trekkers soon owned the Orange Free State and settled down in 1854. -
British Raj founded
After 1858, Great Britain ruled India. Both the English East India Company and the Mughal Empire came officially to an end. The British Raj which is Hindi for “rule” or “reign” in India would last around 90 more years. -
Indian National Congress
Founded in 1885, it dominated the independence movement in the 1930s after Mahatma Gandhi. Following splits in the party the Indian National Congress was confirmed in 1981 as the official Congress party. -
Boer War
War fought from October 11, 1899 to May 31, 1902 between Great Britain and the two Boer republics. The British military was much larger that the Boers at around 500,000 men, while Boers only had about 88,000. -
