Opium Wars
The Opium Wars were fought between Great Britain and China. Great Britain traded China Opium for tea, and opium became highly addictive to the Chinese. This caused an uprising, ultimately leading to China declaring war on Great Britain -
Sepoy Rebellion
The British East India Trading Company started to take over more of India, and the Indians (along with their rulers) had enough. They rebelled against the Britain soldiers and pushed for home rule. -
The Meiji Restoration
The Shogunate was overthrown and the Meiji Emperor was restored. The rapid modernization of Japan causes Japan to become the most industrialized nation in Asia
Tokyo, Japan became one of the top ten cities in population. -
Suez Canal
The Suez Canal is located on the Nile River. It provided a quicker trade route to India. There are no locks because the area it was built on was flat. The Europeans wanted access to this to gain more power over trade. -
1870's: The Start of Imperialism
During this period of time, the Industrial powers of Europe wanted to gain more land and raw materials. They also wanted to set up markets in a variety of different places. This caused lots of commotion and wars between Europeans and the Africans/Asians. -
The Berlin Conference
The Berlin Conference regulated the colonizing and trading in Africa. This is where King Leopold II was given Congo. -
King Leopold II takes over Congo
While in his reign, King Leopold II was given Congo for his own use. He ruled Congo and ordered the people to give him a basket full of rubber and ivory each day or they's have to give him a basket of hands. -
The Boxer Rebellion
In fear that China would be colonized by European powers, the USA declared the Open Door Policy.
A small group in the countryside of China created a rebellion to stand up to the "Foreign Devils." They took over the European section of Beijing for months until foreign powers crushed the rebellion. -

Europe Imperialism in Africa
Africa is divided amongst the European Industrial powers. They imperialized Africa to set up markets and gain raw materials for the mother country.
