    A widespread rebellion against British rule in India. The British put down the revolt within a year. Because of this parliament tightened control of India.
  • British Raj Founded

    British Raj Founded
    British officially claimed India as their colony. Built roads, railways, telegraphs, and canals in India to try and improve it. Indian people didn't want this westernization.
  • David Livingstone Found

    David Livingstone Found
    Henry Morton Stanley went to Africa to find David Livingstone because he had been exploring the interior of the continent. No one had heard from him in years and Stanley found him in the town of Ujiji.
  • Berlin Conference

    When 14 European nations came together to lay down rules for the division of Africa. They did this to prevent any conflict. No African attended the conference.
  • Boer War

    Diamonds and gold were discovered in southern Africa in the 1860s and 1880s so nations started coming in. The Boers or the farmers tried to keep "outsiders" from gaining political rights. The Boers blamed the British for a rebellion and started the Boer war. Known as the first modern total war.
