    The Dutch who were first to Africa, called Boers, were forced to move North when more European settlers arrived. Following the Berlin Conference, many people moved to South Africa to explore (forcing the boers north).
  • Opium Wars

    Opium Wars
    The opium wars began after the British's weak attempts to trade with the Chinese. The British wanted many goods that the Chinese had, but wanted equal trade. To get the Chinese to trade with them, the British smuggled in opium to trade with the Chinese people. As a result much of the Chinese population was addictd to opium.

    The United States were upset with the spheres of influence that excluded them from Japanese trade. To try to fix that the US sent Matthew C. Perry to Japan to work out an agreement called the treaty of Kanagawa.
  • Suez Canal Built

    Suez Canal Built
    In 1869, the construction of the Suez canal was complete. This canal runs from the Mediterranean Sea to the gulf of Suez. The benifit of building this canal is it always trade to be completed faster since boats no longer have to go all the way around Africa.
  • David Livingstone Found

    David Livingstone went to Africa as a Christian missionary, but also to explore Africa to find more trade routes. He lost contact with England, so they decided to send Henry Stanely to try to find him. When they met up Stanely turned to Livingstone "Dr.Livingstone I presume?".

    The Berlin Conference was a meeting between Fourteen nations to divide the continent of Africa. The conference divided the whole nation and only left two unoccupied nations (Liberia and Ethiopia). The fourteen nations didn't invite Africa when they decide to divide it
