    European countries needed the raw materials from africa to further their industrilization.
  • East India Company Collapses due to the Sepoy Mutiny

    Because of inefficient economy, bad governing, and religious/cultural opression by the Dutch East India Company, the Sepoys rebelled, and many followed, which ultimately resulted in the british raj.
  • Suez Canal links the Mediterranean and Red Seas

    This is an artificial canal that allows passage between the mediterranean and the red sea much faster.
  • Berlin Conference convenes to discuss terms for African colonization

    The scramble for africa had begun, and many european countries were scared that war could result from the european countries greed for land. They divided africa into different parts, but each part had a different language/religion.
  • Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii

    The sugar plantation owners owned most of hawaii. The king wanted them out so he told his people to drive them out of power. The kings efforts were looked poorly upon. He later died.
  • Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa

    Ethiopia fought against their European controller and won. They were one of the few. It was because of their ruler Menelik the second. He was going to sign a treaty with italy but realized that his copy was different than the one the italians were signing.
  • Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Philippines taken from Spain

    Because the USA was involved with the cuban war, they were then involved with Spain. The USA's navy was very strong, which lead to the USA gaining control of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines.
  • Boer War in South America

    Boer is dutch for farmer. It is also know as an afrikaner. These people claimed south africa and started planting crops there. The English wanted it too. They got in a war, and the dutch lost, causing them to go on the great trek.
  • Most of Africa is under European control

    This happened for three main reasons; better weaponry (maxim gun) ways of transportation (trains) and medical treatments (quinine).
