Purchase of Seward’s Folly
This was the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. Alaska was a very large area but was not appreciated immediately by the people. Pg 410 -
Annexation of Hawaii
After Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by settlers and the Spanish-American War increased nationalism, Congress and McKinley annexed Hawaii. Hawaii eventually became the 50th state and an important oceanic market. Pg 415 -
Treaty of Paris (1898)
The treaty ended the Spanish-American War and gave control of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the US, while also granting independence to Cuba. Annexation of the Philippines led to a short and bloodily conflict with the US. Pg 415 -
Open door policy
While other nations began to control spheres of influence in China, the US proposed this policy that gave all nations equal trading rights in China. Pg 417 -
Panama Canal
The US built the canal to have much easier access across South America, but the construction angered many people. After the completion of the canal, Colombia was paid $25 million for losing Panama. Pg 418 -
The Great White Fleet
The US sent a fleet of battleships around the globe without a goal of gaining territory, but instead as a display of naval power to Japan and other foreign nations. Pg 419 -
Root-Takahira Agreement
This was an agreement between the US and Japan to respect each others land in the Pacific. This also helped to advance the Open Door Policy in China. Pg 419
