    After Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by settlers and the Spanish-American War increased nationalism, Congress and McKinley annexed Hawaii. Hawaii eventually became the 50th state and an important oceanic market. Pg 415
  • Treaty of Paris (1898)

    The treaty ended the Spanish-American War and gave control of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the US, while also granting independence to Cuba. Annexation of the Philippines led to a short and bloodily conflict with the US. Pg 415
