The Chinese tried to stop British merchants from smuggling in opium in exchange for tea, silk, and other items. They were defeated easily. -
Treaty of Nanjing
It ended the first Opium War in 1842. It was very unequal as the British were granted money and Hong Kong. The Chinese also made a "fair and reasonable" tariff and allowed British merchants to trade at 5 "treaty ports" with whoever they wanted. -
Sepoy Rebellion
Sepoy soldiers or Indian soldiers rebelled against British control. They were put down easily however it ended the control of the East India Trading Company and handed it to the crown. -
Queen Victoria Declared ruler of India
While India was already under the rule of the British crown, Queen Victoria was made Empress of India to ensure complete control over India and to make India seem more closely bound to Great Britain -
Berlin Conference
14 European nations met and discussed the dispute over land distribution and trade in Africa to prevent war and conflict amongst themselves. Only Liberia and Ethiopia remained free and unclaimed. -
Indian National Congress Formed
The Indian National Congress was formed to make the economy better and give more rights to Indians while under the control of the British. It inspired Nationalism throughout India -
Boer War
Dutch farmers in South Africa tried to keep the British away from its resources. It resulted in total war in which 14,000 Africans died and ended with a British victory and occupation of South Africa.
