The Queen adopted her brother's idea of independence, but was quickly shot down by the US. The US wanted to annex Hawaii. US troops locked the Queen in her palace for 15 days, and proceeded to annex it and make it a state. -
Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa
Ethiopia, under the rule of Menelik II, defeated the Italians because he compiled weapons, and used the fact that the Europeans were fighting each other to his advantage. This made Ethiopia one of the few independent countries. -
Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Philippines taken from Spain
This war occured due to American intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. After the war, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam were taken from Spain. The US, however, did not imperialize, but instead prepared the Philippines for self rule. -
Boer War in South Africa
This war was fought by the English and the Dutch (the Boers) in South Africa. Englahd won by using modern tactics of guerilla war and commando raids. They cruelly used concentration camps to contain the Boers, causing the Boers to go on the great trek. -
Most of Africa is under European control
Most of Africa was under European control because of the Berlin Conference. The Europeans desired Africa's natural resources. The European imperialism was good and bad, for example, it was good because the Africans industrialized, but it was bad because they were forced to convert to Christianity.
