European trade with Africa becomes well established
In 1850 Europeans established good trade routes. This way Europe could get all the resources they needed from Africa including rubber, diamonds, and other natural resources. Without good trade in Africa Europeans would not be as wealthy and would not have the resources to industrialize. -
East India Company collaspes due to sepoy rebellion; Brittish Raj begins
The sepoy rebellion was a resistance against the East India Company. Sepoys were Indian soldiers. The Brittish Raj was the complete control of India. So much money was made off of India that India became the "Jewel in the Crown". The Queen even called herself the Empress of India. -
Suez Canal links the Medditterranean and Red Seas
The suez canal was a crucial resource for trade between Asia and Europe. It allowed months to be cut from journeys between the two continents. Instead of having to go under Africa, trade ships could pass through the canal in order to get to Asia. By cutting this travel time trade was more productive making countries in Europe very wealthy. -
Berlin Conference convenes to to discuss terms for African colonization
The Berlin Conference was a meeting held with all of the European countries to divide up Africa into territories owned by Europeans. No African leader was invited to this meeting. They did this, for the most part, to prevent future argemnets over claimed land in Africa. -
Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii
During the time, America was making a lot of money off of Hawaii with its sugar prodiction. Then, Congress passed a tariff on sugar and other goods creating American sugar to be just as expensive as Hawaaian sugar. The queen took the throne and proposed that hawaii should not become part of America. In her rule she also gave herself more power over Hawaii. -
Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the battle of Adwa
Most of Africa had been craved up already but the only two nations standing were Liberia, and Ethiopia. Italy had not established any new territories in Afrca but the ones they did own where right near by Ethiopia (Somaliland and Eritrea). Italy wanted to obtain Ethipia and merge it with its two other territories. The battle over Ethiopia was the Battle of Adwa. -
Spanish-American WAr breaks out; Puerto Rico; Guam; and Philipines taken from Spain
After the Spanish American War, America had gained Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philipine Islands. The U.S. fought along side the Philipines to rid the islands of Spain but once Spain was kicked out the people of the Philipines wanted indepedence from the U.S. The U.S. later granted the Philipines their freedom and it became a new nation. Guam and Puerto Rico remained territories of the United States and still are part of America, today. -
Boer War in South Africa
The Boer war was fought btween the South African Republic and Britian. Britain wanted to annex South Africa but the native people were angered. Winston Churchill used concentration camps to supress the enemy boers. Hundreds of women and children were killed in the camps. In the end the british one due to the asses of people dead from the concentration camps and the fact that 60% of the boers army was unfit to fight. -
Most of Africa is under European control
By 1914, most of Africa is owned by Europe. Two nations still remain, Ethiopia and Liberia. Ethiopia remained independent due to King Meneliks remarkable intelligence and Liberia remained free due to their ability to fend off invaders. Every other piece of land in Africa was owned by someone in Europe.
