French take over Indochina, conquering Vietnam. French had a colonial rule. Many times the Vietnamese had created opposition forces, none that were strong enough to overthrow the French. -

Germans defeat French
French are defeated by the Germans. Official government is the country of France. France and German are allied during World War Two. -
Japanese take Vietnam
The Japanese claim Vietnam, after siding with the Axis powers. The Vichy French and Japanese both hold Vietnam, after German forces were expelled from France. -
Viet Minh Forces
The Viet Minh forces are created to oppose French occupation. The leader of the Viet Minh is Ho Chi Minh. Later, the Viet Minh also oppose the Japanese, forcing them from the country. -
Vietnam Divides
The Allies conclude France owns Vietnam. France does not have enough supplies to occupy the area, so British forces own the southern part of Vietnam. Chinese forces take over the northern part of Vietnam, to disarm the Japanese. -
Japanese in Vietnam
The Japanese are opposed by Viet Minh forces. After the Japanese surrender to the Allies, they allowed the Viet Minh officials to take over public buildings, which boosted Viet Minh popularity. -
Viet Minh's election and the French
The Viet Minh won an election which gave them complete control over north Vietnam. France gets the leader of the Viet Minh to sign an agreement saying that they can force out the Chinese, in exchange for the Viet Minh being a 'free' republic. -
Viet Minh and the French 2
French troops kicked the Viet Minh out of north Vietnam. British forces leave Vietnam, leaving Vietnam to the French. The Viet Minh begin a guerrilla war against the French. This is the First Indochina War.
