Person is exposed to food allergen for the first time but no outward response is experienced. -

Internal Response of First Exposure to Allergen
Internally the person's body forms a large amount of IgE antibodies that attach to cells all over their body. -

Body is Prepared for Second Exposure
The body is ready if the allergen enters the body again. -

Second Exposure to Food Allergen
Person eats food allergen for the second time. This time the allergen binds to the IgE antibodies that were formed after the first exposure. -

Release of Histamines
Signal is sent out for the body's immune system to respond by releasing large amounts of histamines into the body causing an allergic reaction. -

Allergic Reaction
The allergic reaction causes the body to respond within minutes to seconds through Skin: rash, redness and/or swelling; Nose: sneezing, itching and/or excessive nasal secretions; Lungs: shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and/or swelling of airway; Digestive: stomach cramps, vomiting and/or diarrhea.
