He sails up the Husdon Strait which allows access to Hudson Bay and the Northwest Passage has been discovered. -

This company sells goods across Canada and is very popular among the citizens. This was an attraction among people in Europe and many immigrants came to Canada after the company was formed. -

The Peace & Friendship treaty was created to allow land to be shared between immigrants and first nations peoples. -
Upper and Lower Canada are formed
The Constitutional Act divdes Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada. Upper Canada was Ontario and Lower Canada was Quebec. The purpose was to derail the spread of liberal democratic ideas that were spreading in Europe and the US, by offering very limited democratic reform. -
Battle of Seven Oaks
The Northwest Company told the Metis if they destroyed the crops and homes of the settlers then maybe they would leave and the Metis would get their land back. The Metis fenced in the Scottish settlers and when they came our one Metis died and 20 Scottish settlers. -
First railway is opened
The first railway was opened that went from La Prairie to St. Jean, Quebec. This attracted many immigrants. -
Guillaume Sayer was put on trial for illegal trading
At Guillaume Sayer's trial Louis Riel gathered a bunch of men to crowd around the courthouse while the trial took place. Sayer was proven quilty but they didn't want to punish him in fear of upsetting the Metis. -

This Act says nothing about which people will be allowed to immigrate to Canada. As a result, it is necessary to make changes to the law. -
Searching for Louis Riel
People wanted Louis Riel hung and were offering a reward to whoever found him. Thomas Scott was killed for taunting him so they wanted revenge. -
Dominion Lands Act is passed
On the payment of a ten-dollar fee, men over 21 can receive 160 acres of land. The Canadian government wants to settle the West with farmers loyal to Canada. They want to prevent American settlers from moving into the Canadian prairies. -

Lots of people came to Canada from the Ukraine because of the railway that went coast to coast, the amount of available land, and the great price of grain. -

Upset native Americans because of so many immigrants
Immigrants would come to Canada in poverty and were taking jobs away from native born Canadians. They were also lowering the standard of living and Canadians didn't like that. -
Chinese head tax
The Canadian government created a 'Chinese head tax' of $50 that Chinese people who wanted to come to Canada had to pay. They hoped this would discourage them from coming. -
New Immigration Act is passed
It gives the government the right to turn away any immigrants they don't want living in Canada mostly people either mentally or physically handicapped. The bill also gives the government the right to deport unwanted immigrants. -
Winnipeg is the city with the most foreign born residents in Canada
Winnipeg has the highest amount of people currently living in the city that are from other places and have different ethnical backgrounds.
