Provided the first rules to be followed by the United States concerning citizenship. This act denied citizenship to "nonwhites" . -
Alien and Sedition Act
Required 14 years of residency before citizenship and provided for the deportation of dangerous aliens but it changed to five-year residency in 1800. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Ends the Mexican-American War, granting American citizenship to 80,000 Mexican nationals who already live in territory now ceded to the United States. -

The Gentleman's Agreement
Japans government agreed to limit immigration of unskilled workers to the United States in exchange for the repeal of aliens unlawfully in the U.S. -
Immigration Act of 1917
Mexicans are exempted from anti-immagration lwas so that they can provide labor. -
Filipino Reperation Act
Offers filipinos transportation back to the Philippines if they promise to ever come back to the United States. -
Alien Registration Act
States that contained illegal aliens within them had to have the aliens registered and finger printed. -
McCarran-Walter Act
Extends token immigration to Asian nations for support during World War 2. -
Immigration Reform and Control Act
Imposes employers sanctions making it illegal for employers to hire undocumented workers and for the first time it was a crime to work without immigration authorization. Border enforcement was also increased.
