Potato Famine in Ireland
I am Arthur Ultan from Kingstown, Ireland. I am now poor because of the spread of the potato famine. I have managed to survive by myself after my family died. I am losing food, crops, and money because of the potato famine. The potatoes in my land are dying and the famine is spreading. Many have lost their homes and are dying. I fear that I am next. -
Effects of the Potato Famine
It has been a long time since I was poor but this year, life in Ireland is worst. I have lost almost everything including my home and land. I am trying to survive in the streets and have to live in a little hut. The weather is getting colder because of the snow. I am afraid that I might freeze any moment. I have decided to move to America so I won't starve or freeze to death. Millions have left Ireland because of the potato famine and I will leave too. -
Arrival in America
I have finally arrived in America! I must start a new life to move on from the past. My name is still Arthur but I still need a job. Once I make enough money, I will go out to the West for land. I am now earning money from a job in a food market. Making money was hard but I was still thankful to have a job. I am saving as much money as I could. -
Jobs and Railroads
After many years in America, I have found different jobs. I am currently working in a railroad company. I have good experiences from jobs so I can find jobs easily. I sold my home for money because I decided to move closer to the west slowly. Railroads are being built to the west so I am going along with it as it is being built. It will take a while before I can arrive in the west. -
Life in the West
I have reached the west and have found free land after many years. I am building a house and quit my job to start farming. My dream had came true after the hard times in Ireland. The potato famine almost took my life. The government gave me free land so I can improve it and settle in it. I am improving the land by growing more crops and building a farm. -
Settling in the West
I now own the land officially and life is normal. My farm business is good and I have a home. I have many crops and farm animals. I will live here for the rest of my life after many hard years from the past. I have settled and will always remember Ireland. I am thankful to be alive and how I have a home. I find the west very nice and it is a good place to live in. I will always remember Ireland and I will live in America for the rest of my life.
