  • The Dead Rabbits Riot

    The Dead Rabbits Riot was a "gang war". Originally, the war started out of a small street fight, but for 2 days, almost a thousand people were rioting and fighting in New York City. To add to that, the police force was also very weak and disorganized at the time, which allowed the rioters easier access to loot, damage property, and cause violence to others.
  • The Ku Klux Klan is Established

    The Ku Klux Klan is a white supremacist group created by Confederate veterans. The group was very violent towards black people and committed terrorist attacks and bombings.
  • John D. Rockefeller Creates Standard Oil

    Rockefeller controlled many oil refineries in Ohio and bought out almost every competitor. He basically had a monopoly on the oil trade. He controlled 90-95% of oil in the US.
  • Alexander Graham Bell Patents the Telephone

    Alexander Graham Bell was interested in making a “harmonic telegraph" to transmit messages via wire. Thomas A. Watson and Bell worked together and made a prototype. He filed a patent and then made his first-ever message.
  • The Great Oklahoma Land Race

    In Oklahoma, previously assigned Indigenous peoples' land, was rushed by men and women to secure acres of land for themselves. 50,000 people were lined up to settle.
  • Ellis Island Opens to Process Immigrants

    Before Ellis Island, immigrants would be processed by the state governments, not federal. Tickets were bought by family members in the US or sold to the immigrants. Annie Moore, from Ireland, was the first person to ever pass through Ellis Island.
  • The Wizard of Oz (Book) is Published

    The Wizard of Oz was written by L. Frank Baum. It is a children's book. The copies of the book were quickly sold out and the book was a hit. It has sold 3 million copies.
  • J.P. Morgan Founds U.S. Steel

    J.P. Morgan created the U.S Steel Company. He had a monopoly over trade and was very successful because steel was a very important element to industrialization.
  • Teddy Roosevelt Becomes President of the United States

    Teddy Roosevelt became the 26th president of the US, after William McKinley, former president, was assassinated. He was the vice president for only 194 days before he started his presidency.
  • Ford Motor Company is Founded

    Henry Ford had always built racing cars for fun. A few years later, he invested $28,000 with the help of 12 others. His first ever car was built and sold July 15, 1903.
  • Ida Tarbell Publishes Her Article About Standard Oil

    Ida Tarbell published an article against Standard Oil's monopoly. Her article raised awareness of trusts and monopolies and allowed more businesses and companies to flourish. Industries were more aware of shady companies.
  • The 16th Amendment is Passed

    The 16th Amendment allowed Congress to have an income tax. This is important because it helped industries with taxing their workers.
  • Angel Island Opens to Process Immigrants

    Angel Island was an immigrant processing station on the West Coast of the US. Thousands of Asian immigrants were detained and held in bad and oppressive conditions. This was influenced by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
  • The 17th Amendment is Passed

    The 17th Amendment allowed citizens to elect their senators of each state. The people wanted the senate to accurately represent them, and directly voting for them was the best way.
  • The Empire State Building Opens

    Located in Manhattan, the Empire State Building was constructed for corporate business offices, and the goal was to be the tallest in the world. There was strong competition to create the tallest building between countries. The title was claimed by The Chrysler Building.
