Immigration

  • Immigrants

    Immigrants
41 681 immigrants were admitted to Canada. I chose this date since that is a lot of immigrants in a short period of time.
  • Jew Immigrants

    Jew Immigrants
138 000 Jews immigrated to Canada. Many were refugees from Czarist Russia and Eastern Europe. I have learned about the royal family living in Czarist Russia in class so it caught my eye. I thought that was a lot of refugee's in a very short period of time.
  • Head Tax Raised

    Head Tax Raised
The head tax on Chinese immigrants was raised from $50 to $100. this event sounded interesting because we only charged certain people to come to Canada because of their race.
  • Head Tax Dropped

    Head Tax Dropped
The head tax for coming into Canada dropped for some people but not for everyone. I chose this event because I think it is unfair that the head tax was not dropped for everyone.
  • Border Inspection

    Border Inspection
A border inspection was created on the U.S. Canadian border so no refugees could get through. I chose this event because it sounded unfair but the border has to be protected.
  • Black Oklahoman Farmers

    Black Oklahoman Farmers
Black Oklahoman farmers wanted to immigrate to Canada to flee from the racism back home. The Edmonton Municipal Council called on Ottawa to prevent black immigration. In 1911 the Canadian government passed an order stating “any immigrants belonging to the Negro race, which race is deemed unsuitable to the climate and requirements of Canada”. The order was never actually proclaimed. I chose this event to show how much the government has changed.
  • The Komagatu Maru

    The Komagatu Maru
The Komagatu Maru arrived in Vancouver on May 23,1914, with 376 Indians aboard. They were refused admittance into Canada. They stayed two months in the Vancouver harbour until July 23,1914. they had an unsuccessful appeal to to the BC supreme court, the boat sailed back to BC . In that whole time only one immigrant out of the 376 was admitted to Canada. I chose this event because it was really weird b.ecausue thta many people came and only one got in.
  • Department of Citizenship and Immigration

    Department of Citizenship and Immigration
The Department of Citizenship and Immigration was formed. I thought this is be an important piece of history.
  • "Enemy Aliens"

    "Enemy Aliens"
Germans where removed from the "enemy aliens" category. I chose this event because i think it is terrible that there is an enemy aliens list. It is wonerful that countries are being taken off of it.
  • 10 Million

    10 Million
The 10 millionth immigrant came to Canada since the Confederation was celebrated. It was British psychiatrist Dr. Richard Swinson “and his family”. I thought it was cool that we had that many immigrants.
