Viking Exploration
The Vikings are the first know people to come to America. They wanted to find "booty" or money. To find it, they explored, and found America. -
Jun 1, 1492
Spanish Exploration
The Spanish wanted to find a route to Asia. Chrisopher Columbus decided to take three boats to find Asia. He landed in present day Cuba. He created a colony there. Cortez also tried to find a route, but he landed in Mexico, and found the Aztec Indians and took them over. This is how the Spanish colonies started. -
British Immigration
The British first came to America in 1585, but it as a failure. They tried again in 1607, landing in America. There, tribes helped them stay alive, but when John Smith leaves, the tribes stopped. Then in 1619, the first form of government in America was created, it was called The House of Burgesses. This helped the British immiration grow, so more colonies could grow. -
French Exploration
The French immigrated to expand fur trade. In 1608 the explorer, Samuel de Champlain, founded the first permanent French colony. It was the Quebec colony. -
Dutch Immigration
In 1610, Dutch traders landed in the Hudson River valley. Their trade with the Native Americans was so good the Dutch set up a permanent colony. This colony was called New Netherland. From here, the Dutch expanded their land, which increased migration. -
European Potato Famine
In Ireland, there was a potato famine. It happened in 1845, and it made many people starve, and die. That is why people in Ireland wanted to migrate to America. -
Assassination of Czar Alexander II
On March 13, 1881, Czar Alexander II was killed by a bomb. The bombed was placed by the "People's Will" group. His assassination led the Russians to leave Russian and immigrate to America. -
Pogroms
Pogroms are massacres of the Jewish people. They ruled from mainly from 1881 to 1906. The worst part of the time of the Pograms were during the Russian Revolution. They were another cause of Russian immigration. -
"Temporary" May Laws
In 1882, the "temporary" May Laws are created. These laws had a hatred for the Jewish. The laws made it to where the Jewish could not live in Villages or buy or rent any property. These laws were supose to be temporary, but they stuck. This made immigration increase because the Jewish were being persecuted. -
World War I
In 1914, World War I broke out. It began because of the assassination of ArchDuke Ferdinand. It lasted for about four years. It was one of the first major wars, which is why it is so importanat. This war ended in 1918. This caused immigration because people in Russia were dying because of this war. -
Decline in Polish Immigration
After World War I there was a decline in Polish immigration. People left Polnd in hope to return with money, but most people did not return. Poland finally gained independence. -
Japanese Immigration Stopped
President Calvin Coolidge signed an order which stopped Japanese immigration. This order was signed to cut off Japanese people from immigrating to the U.S. This was happening during the World Wars. -

After the Taisho era, a leader named Hirohito came in and stated his rule as the Showa ers. -

World War II
Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-violence treaty, then one week later Germany attacked Poland. A German Airplane bombed the town of Wielun. The polish surrendered in the Begining of October after loosing 65,000 troops and thousands of civilians. This caused immigration in Poland because people were dying. -
Bombing of Pearl Harbor
In Dec. 7 of 1941 at 7:55 a.m.(Hawaiian time), a Japanese bomber soared over the Pearl Harbor base. The United States were surprised by the attack. Not knowing what to expect, the U.S had to enter WWII ( World War II). After the bombing, the Japanese immigrants started to be treated poorly and persecuted. -
Executive Order 9066
President Franklin Rosevelt signed an order which forced all Japanese Americans to leave their homes and go to concentration camps. President Rosevelt put them in internment camps because he wanted to make sure they weren't planted in the U.S for a secret attack plan. -
McCarran-Walter Act of 1952
In 1952, McCarran- Walter Act was signed to remove the ethnic & racial bars, which let Japanese people immigrate. -
Soviet Jews
During the spand of 1960-1970, the government in Russia made it very difficult to leave and go to America. More than 400,000 Jewsish people wanted to leave the U.S.S.R. The government would not make it easy for them to leave though. Finally in the early 1970s 250,000 Jews were aloud to leave and migrate to America. Later, the govrnment started to let more people leave, which increased the Russian immigration population. -

Beata Pozniak was born in Gdansk, Poland, and immigrated to America in 1988, and currently lives there. Her parents were Roger Zbigniewn Taylor and Krystyna Durbakiewicz Marson. She was a director, actor, and producer. Later she married Jeff Daniels on August 8, 2001 who was also an actor and playwritter. -
