The potato famine in Ireland causes 1.5 million Irish people to America. Because of their Catholosism they are discriminated against. -

The gold rush influences immigration from China, and Eastern Americans. The Foreign Miners' Tax is imposed, but focuses mostly on the Chinese. -

The Chinese Exclusion act prohibits any Chinese who do not already have family in America from immigrating here. -

After President McKinley is assasinated by a Polish man, the Anarchist Exclusion Act is put into place which can bar people from entering the U.S. based on their political beliefs. -
California's Alien Land Law
This law prohibits noncitizens from owning land. This law provides the model for other states to follow. -
Literacy Tests
In order to enter into the United States, an immigrant must be able to read 40 words in a certain language, and prohibits immigration from Asia (excluding the Phillipines and Japan). -
Quota Act
This act limits annual European immigration to 3% of population already present in the United States. -
Quota Act Part 2
This act further limits the percent of European immigrants to 2%. -
Oriental Exclusion Act
This act prohibits most immigration from Asia including wives and children of US citizens of Asian ancestry. -
Immigration Ceiling
The annual immigration ceiling of 150,000 is made permanent. 70% of the 150,000 is made for immigrants from Northern and Western Europe, and 30% for Southern and Eastern Europe. There is still no immiration from Asia allowed at all. -
Deportation of Mexicans
Many Mexicans, almost 500,000 were sent back to Mexico regardless of their citizenship status during the Great Depression era. -

Because of WWII, Philipinos are now reconsidered to be US citizens so they can be involved in the draft. Japanese internment camps evacuate 112,000 Japanese into 10 camps. -
Worldwide Immigration Ceiling
The ceiling is set at 290,000 for Eastern and Western hemispheres. -

The goal of this act was to make it difficult for undocumented people to find work. -
Immigration Act of 1990
This act increases amount of annual immigrants to 700,000. 10,000 permanent visas are offered to immigrants who can invest 1 mil to urban areas and 500,000 to rural areas.
