In the 1850's the Italians came for the gold rush. When the goldrush died down, many Italians stayed to establish small towns based around agricultural communities in rural Victoria. As the Italian communities built up, businessmen, tradesmen and professionals from Italy joined them. -

It was not until the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s that Spanish immigrants began to arrive in Victoria. The first Spanish restaurant was opened in Melbourne in 1860. -

The chinese came for the gold rush. Mostly men came. They mined for gold hoping they would become wealthy. When the Chinese arrived at the goldfields,they stayed together in large teams with a head man in charge. Groups were allocated duties such as mining, cooking, or growing vegetables for the team. -

In the 1860's the kanakas came to Australia. Some were willing slaves but the majority were either brought here under false pretenses or blatantly stolen from their families to work mainly in the cane fields of this nation. -

Whole communities, towns, mining establishments, pastoral properties and some well known explorations in the interior have been made successful because of their contributions. In 1890 most Irish arrivals to Victoria came as assisted immigrants, many escaping cultural repression in Ireland. In contrast to many other groups, they came in equal numbers of men and women. Many sought their fortunes on the goldfields.
The Irish worked in Victoria as whalers, fishermen and farm hands and in townships as labourers and factory workers. A few became property owners and professionals.
