Birth Date and Life as a kid Immigrant A
There was a little boy born on September 14, 1864 in London, England. That little boy was me. William Reed is my name. I was an only child as a kid. My parents never had enough money to be able to care for a second one. We were ruled by a demanding queen. Her name was Queen Victoria. My parents would always complain that her taxes were high though. We were always making a little bit below average when it came to money. But, we were able to survive.

Why my family wanted to move to America Immigrant A
My dad told me he was looking for work, and for a new change of scenery. He was very tired with the taxes that Queen Victoria had been giving to us, and he heard that there is no king or queen in America and that’s what first sparked his interest. Mom felt the same way and was wanting to move for the same reason. I had just graduated from college anyway and told them that I could work there too. They said that the deal is done and that they are going to start saving money to pay for the trip.

The men in the building first asked us about our financial situation. We told them that we were about average, but back in England we were taxed a ton, so we could have made more money. Next came the medical exam. Doctors checked under our eyelids to make sure that we did not have that newly spreading eye infection called “Trachoma.” Thankfully, we were all healthy and we moved on. They did a couple of other things and then we were done. They handed us a piece of paper. It was our Citizenship.

Historical Event #2 Empire State Building Immigrant A
A couple days later I received a call. It was from the man in charge of building the Empire State Building. He told me that I was hired, and that I would be working on floors 1-5. I was relieved. I finally got a job and I was working on the lower floors, where there was little risk of injury. It has been a week now. I have seen about 20 people already fall to their death from above. It is scary watching it happen right there and then. No wonder this job has so many openings for workers up above.

In August I took a turn in interest for jobs. I wanted to go to the steel industry. I had this certain feeling for it that I couldn't explain. I got a job at Carnegie's Mills Pro. It was the best company for steel at the time. When I joined the company and realized how much money it was making I was astonished. Its prices were so cheap and that's why everybody wanted it. It was also the best steel around. A new country with growing skyscrapers needed this and they got it.
