My birthday
I was born January 18, 1896 at 3:18 a.m. in Berlin, Germany. My mother had a difficult time getting me out because I was 8 lbs. 8 oz. -
Arriving at Ellis Island
We arrived at Ellis Island and our family was so excited. We came to America because our family needed work and we wanted to own land. It was our dream to own land. Hopefully one day that dream will come true. Ellis Island was gorgeous to my eyes. We couldn't wait to start our lives new. We as in my mother, father, brother and sister. My brother is 4, my sister 10, and I am 14. -
Living Conditions
We found our own home! Yes, it is a one room, smells horrible, broken and boarded windows, look at the bright side! We don' t have to share a house with strangers. We have no running water, the streets are filthy, and it is very crowded. Eh, at least it's in the city! -
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
My sister and I worked at the factory for only a month, then it was set on fire. I got out on the elevator but my sister wasn't so lucky. She tried to jump out of the window but caught on fire while doing so. I tried to go after her but a fireman wouldn't let me pass him. -
Moving
Our family saved money for the past year to take a train to live in Lancaster, PA. When we got down here we bought our own farm. It was our dream come true! We could be independent farmers. -
Improved Living Conditions
Since we bought the farm my family has been happier. I am not so happy. I am a city girl and that's where I belong. I'm happy we are independent farmers and get to keep our profits. I want to go back to the city and become a detective. That's MY dream.
