traveling to america
I used to be a potato farmer in Ireland. Best in the buisness, because I had the most fertile and productive soil. I was making a lot of money, however the potato famine came and killed my hard work. spreading disease and death throughout all the potatoes in ireland even mine.I was able to live with it for a while but I was losing way to much money and I had to sell my land for cheap. I ended up cutting my losses and using almost all my money on a boat ticket to America thus starting my journey. -
surviving in poverty
It was taking has taken me much longer to find a job than I expected, and I am beggining to wonder if I would have had more luck staying in ireland. I am surviving off of scraps and nothing more, but soon I find work. I here that extra hands are needed on the railroads, and I will work for low pay. Well heck I will work for anything in order to get a roof over my head before winter hits. -
railroad
I found work on the railroads got shelter through the winter and although I still cannot hammer a nail in straight I feel I have gotten through the tough part. I recently heard that there was land being given away for free if you can win it in a race and I think that I might participate, because hey it's a chance at free land. -
no luck
It has been a while and i still have not even come close to winning any land, and most recently I got injured during one of the races when I got knocked off my horse by a very aggresive woman. On the ground I struggled trying to get up fast but I did not see the incoming horse and it trampled my left thigh leaving a painful gash. I think that the only way for me to gain land now is to buy it. -
land
After a long time spent working on the rail roads and some other small jobs I had enough money to buy land so I took a train farther into the west where i found land sutible for farming. The land was nothing like the land I had at home but it would have to do. -
land
I did have some trouble gaining the land though, because when i bought it I had to take a loan from the bank and if i dont make any money throughout the year then I might not be able to pay the loan and the bank will take my land right out from under me. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however if i lose my land I will be even worse off then when I started. -
success
The frst year of farming is the toughest year because you need to build a house buy cattle buy the first crops and find the buisness that you will buy them from but somehow I made it through the year and am ready to set off for the next year. The next step is yet to come because no farm is complete with out animals and then to have animals i would need to hire workers. In otherwords I still have a long way to go to build my dream farm.
