Entering Elis Island
Entering Elis island was a great thing for an immigrant from Ireland. The new hope of lasting survival was great. There was many jobs for us Irish men. Even though we would get lower wages we still had jobs. I was a construction builder. This was by far the most dangerous work in the U.S. But to feed my family it must be done. -
Still at Ellis Island
We are still at Ellis Island, we’ve waited almost a day now we got here and the doctors left when we were almost to them it was horrible to have to stay there a night it was cramped and overcrowded. It was not the greatest experience I have had in my life time but it will sure be one to remember. -
New Home
We have now settled into a new apartment in New York City. The living conditions are horrible but we must deal with them. We got the cheapest we could have. We are on the 10th floor the climb up and down the stairs is horrible each day. My youngest son is sick from the conditions, I pray he will get better. -
Almost a Year in U.S.
It has almost been a year in the U.S. it has been hard, my youngest son has died from a disease we didn’t know about. I have made new friends that have helped us through tough times. We have moved to a new home from the old one after my son died. We now live in a suburb as the locals call it. We have a cleaner home to live in and we all are healthy. I take a street car to get to work now it is very convenient for me, my wife uses it to go in town for groceries and other things. -
New Youth Entering Old youth leaving
We have now had our 4th child. His name is Ben, he is about 2 weeks now. But in other news our oldest son has now left to start his family in the city. It was a wonderful run for him and I hope he will be more successful than me in my life in this golden land of opportunity.
