Greek
Greek migration to Australia started in the early colonial period. In 1829 seven Greek sailors convicted of piracy by a British naval court were sentenced to transportation to New South Wales. -
Germans
Victoria’s first German immigrants arrived in 1838 under a British bounty to attract vineyard workers. -
Chinese
Chinese settlers first rushed to Victoria in large numbers hoping to strike gold. Most were men contracted to agents who sponsored their voyages, and they faced years of difficult repayments. They also sent money back to their families in China. -
Italian
Hundreds of Italians were lured to Victoria by the 1850s gold rushes. When the gold ran out, many Italians left Victoria to work in other parts of Australia. Those who stayed established small, mainly agricultural communities in country Victoria. -

The Spanish came mainly for the gold rush. -
