First Immigration Settlement
This is marks as the first immigration settlement in America by the English colonist in Jamestown. -
African Slave Importation
Africans are brought to the United States, not for settlement, but for slavery. One cause for this was the lack of labor workers. -
Unliked Quakers
Quakers seemed to be considered the first immigrants by the perspective of the Englishmen. The quakers were outlawed because of their religion and were not liked. They were only allowed in Rhode Island. -
German and Swiss Immigrants
German's and Swiss' were considered to be the first immigrants that were a different race to the Englishmen. They were known to settle in Pennsylvania. -
Naturalization Act
This was the first act considering immigrants. It granted citizenship if they were "a free white person, being good of character, and lived in the United States for two years". -
The Alien and Sedition Act of 1798
President John Adams passed this act to have the ability to detain and remove immigrants that are dangerous or threaten the government or president. This also made it difficult for immigrants to apply for residency by changing it from 5 to 14 years. -
Indian Removal Act
President Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act. The act made the Native Americans leave their land. This lead to the Trial of Tears, where thousands of them died walking thousands of feet away from the country. They were pretty much treated as if they were the immigrants in their land. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The states Northern of the Gila River were sold to the United States. I would assume the Mexicans that were living in the sold states became immigrants if they did not choose to become U.S citizens. I consider this the first Latino immigration settlement. -
Chinese Immigration
This can be considered the first wave of Chinese immigration in the United States. Most likely, the Chinese migrated to be able to support their families. They worked in gold mines, building railraods, and also were merchants. -
14th Amendment
Once it was confirmed. The 14th Amendment grants citizenship to any one who was born in the United Staes. Due to this, many immigrants took advantage by migrating to the United States and giving birth in the country. In addition, African Americans were given citizenship as well. -
The First "Great Wave" of immigrants
Depending on the historians, there were several "Great Waves" of immigration. This great wave in my opinion is the first one due to the rate of the amount of immigrants coming to the United States. The "Great Wave" consisted of mostly Europeans. Due to some passed events in their contries brought them to the United States. Some events were the Irish Potato Famine and failed revolutions in Germany and France. -
Border Patrols
Also known as mounted watchmen, They traveled around the border to prevent immigrants crossing to the United States. -
Japanese Concentration Camps
After the attack of Pearl Harbor, the United State's paranoia led thousands of Japanese to concetration camps. This included Japanese-Americans and WWI veterans that were Japanese. Some camps were included in Arizona. -
Proposition 203
Also known as English Language Education for Children in Public Schools Act states that students will be taught only in English. Students who are not fluent in English are sent to a year long program for them to learn it. This affects - for sure - all immigrants who do not know English. This act was passed in Arizona. There are similar acts that were passed in other States such as California. -
Arizona does not Allow Businesses with Immigrants
Arizona passed the Legal Arizona Workers Act which punishes businesses who are caught having immigrant workers. -
Current Issuez with Syria Refugees
This is the recent, most discussed immigration issue with Syria refugees. Some are trying to go to the United States for safety, but the Americans are afraid of another terrorist attack. President Obama is trying to bring them in while Congress is against it.
