    Australopithecus Afarensis, also known as southern ape, appeared in the afar triangle in Africa 3-4 million years ago. This hominid was three feet tall and had long arms.These long arms were used for carrying kids and defending themselves. These hominids did not use tools. Their only tools were their hands. Even though these hominids did not travel from continent to continent, they were able to walk on two feet to travel from food source to food source using their hands to gather their food.

    Homo habilis, also known as handy man, appeared in Africa about 1.5 - 2 million years ago. This hominid had a larger brain than Australopithecus Afarensis. It also was taller and looked more like a human than Australopithecus Afarensis. Homo habilis used tools, such as, rocks for chopping, sharp stones for cutting, and bones for digging. Homo habilis used tools to hunt and get food. They might have even made traps. This skill is important so they wouldn't starve to death.

    Homo erectus, also known as upright man, appeared 1.8 million - 200,000 B.C. in Asia. This hominid stood up straight. It was also taller and thinner than Homo habilis. It also had strong bones and a thick skull. Homo erectus had hand axes made of stone as a tool and they were the first of the hominids to use fire. Homo erectus was a very good walker and runner.
    This helped them be the first hominid to leave Africa.

    Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis, also known as wise man, appeared in Germany, Europe, Africa, and near eastern parts of Asia about 230,000 - 30,000 years ago. This hominid had a large brain and was shorter and stockier than modern humans, but much stronger. Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis used 60 different kinds of tools such as, knives and spear points. This hominid had doctors for healing the hurt allowing them to live longer.

    Homo sapiens sapiens, also known as doubly wise man, appeared 35,000 - 12,000 B.C. all across the globe. This hominid had a large brain, small teeth, and slender bones. They had stone blades, tools for engraving and sculpting and needles for sewing. Homo sapiens sapiens had better tools, clothing and shelter for survival. This helped them survive for much longer than the other hominids.
